Whitewater kayaking in India has a relatively short but vibrant history. The sport started gaining popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s when a few adventurous kayakers from Europe and the United States began exploring the country’s rivers.
One of the first commercial whitewater kayaking expeditions in India was organized in 1985 on the Ganges River by David Allardice, a British kayaker who had previously paddled the Amazon and the Nile. The Expedition was a success, and it paved the way for the development of commercial kayaking trips in India.
In the early 1990s, a few Indian kayakers began taking up the sport, and the Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA) was formed in 1991 to promote the kayaking sport in the country. The IKCA has since Organized several national and international kayaking competitions and training programs.
Whitewater kayaking in India gained more exposure in the early 2000s when a few international kayaking magazines featured stories about the country’s rivers and expeditions. This led to an increase in the number of foreign kayakers visiting India to explore its rivers.
Today, there are several outfitters and adventure tour companies that offer guided kayaking trips throughout the Indian Himalayas, in addition to kayaking, many of these companies also offer other adventure activities, such as rafting, camping, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, motorbike tours, zipline tours, and some other activities.
